To date we have generated nearly 3/4 of the funding necessary to complete the track project and equip our sports teams properly. If you would like to be a part of this project that will benefit the school as well as the community, you can do so by sending donations directly to the Prentice School District at 1025 Town St., Prentice, WI 54556. Simply designate where you would like the funds to go and the school will take care of the rest. Thank you for your generosity and support. Go Bucs!

Process

The base foundation took some reworking from the original plan as drain tiles and drain fields needed to be added. The increased number of lanes pushed the track perimeter closer to an inclined area. The possibility of structural collapse in this section during inclement weather demanded a cautious approach in which reinforcement structures were added. This spring, after the crushed gravel bed has had a season to settle from a heavy frost, some finish grading of the gravel surface to match the elevation mapping will take place to ensure a smooth surface with the correct grade. Our track base will then stand ready to be sealed with the first binding layer of asphalt.

The journey has been a long process but the reward will be great. Our students will be able to be physically active outside learning competitive team relays and showcasing individual feats of strength and endurance.

Our community members will have a safe area for walking and jogging. The rubberization of the track will be immensely beneficial for everyone including people with joint problems as the low impact surface will present a comfortable environment for continued exercise.

The track initially started as a replacement for the existing track but then morphed into a certified WIAA sanctioned track with 9 lanes, a shot put and discus throwing area, long jump and triple jump runways and landing pits as well as pole and high jump areas. Funding is currently being sought for the final steps which would be to put the second layer of asphalt down with the rubberization coat following that.

When all is said and done, the Prentice School District will have a track capable of hosting conference and regional events as well as an ideal exercising platform for community members to enjoy while maintaining their desires for a healthy and active lifestyle.

We are fortunate to have great partners that have funded the track project. The school is still actively seeking final funding to match what was previously donated by community members, foundations, and businesses.

There has not been a track meet held in Prentice for more than a decade. With a push for the final financial support we will be able to see the transformation of turning unusable running lanes, long jump and triple jump runways that had unsafe cracks and crevices into a safe platform for everyone.

Benefits

The benefits for the community in this project would be great, allowing public use of the track for fitness and wellness as it is hard to walk in the village as many streets do not have sidewalks. During meets, whether conference or regional, businesses would see an increase of traffic from the sheer volume of people in the immediate area.

The benefits of having our own track are numerous and we are excited about the completion of this project that has had zero impact on our taxpayers. When the track is finally complete we’ll look forward to:

  • Encouraging Physical Activity: A track provides students with a safe, designated space to engage in physical exercise, promoting healthier lifestyles and overall well-being. Physical activity is essential for combating childhood obesity, improving mental health, and supporting cognitive development.
  • Fostering Sports and Teamwork: A track will enable our school to offer organized sports programs on site, specifically track and field as well as cross-country, and other running-based activities. These programs teach students valuable skills like teamwork, discipline, and perseverance.
  • Supporting Academic Success: Research shows that physical activity is linked to improved academic performance. Regular exercise can boost concentration, memory, and the ability to learn. By providing students with the means to stay active, our track will indirectly support students’ academic achievements.
  • Community Engagement and School Pride: The Prentice track can become a central feature of the school’s facilities, providing a space for events, sports competitions, and community gatherings. We expect this to foster more school spirit, create a sense of pride, and strengthen the relationship between the school and the local community.
  • Long-Term Impact on Students: By having access to our track, students are encouraged to develop lifelong fitness habits. This can have a long-term positive impact on their health and wellness well into adulthood.
  • Attracting Students and Enhancing Reputation: A modern, well-maintained track can serve as an attractive feature for prospective students and their families. It demonstrates the school’s commitment to providing a well-rounded education that values both academic and physical development.
  • Providing Equal Opportunities: For schools in underfunded or undeserved communities, having access to a track can level the playing field, allowing all students to participate in sports and physical activities, regardless of their background or economic status. By supporting the building of this track, you have played a vital role in improving the health, academic success, and community engagement of the school and the students it serves. In summary everyone wins!
